- May 11, 2024
Berserk is considered one of the greatest manga of all time. However, the anime did not meet expectations; still, it’s a great and enjoyable anime. This anime has one of the best stories. The story offers a thrilling mix of action, profound character reflections, and compelling themes that resonate with real life. It caters to a wide range of tastes, but be prepared for a gritty and intense journey filled with violence. As always, I’ve tried to make this watch guide as simple as possible so that beginners can easily understand how to watch and just dive right in. So, let’s get started!
Plot Summary
Guts, a young mercenary known for his massive sword, drifts from job to job, driven by the promise of gold. His path crosses with the Band of the Falcon when he clashes with them after a mission. Their leader, Griffith, intrigued by Guts’ strength, challenges him to a duel. Though Guts is defeated and severely injured, Griffith offers him a chance to join his band.
Recovering in their camp, Guts faces Griffith again and, bound by the condition of joining the Band of the Falcon if he loses, ends up becoming a key member after another loss. Over the next three years, Guts rises to become a trusted commander, helping the Band of the Falcon achieve victory after victory on the battlefield.
However, beneath their success, dark forces stir, threatening to upend Guts’ world and challenge everything he has come to value.
Berserk Chronological order
For the most satisfying viewing experience, it’s recommended to watch Berserk in chronological order.
Kenpu Denki Berserk
Berserk: The Golden Age Arc I – The Egg of the King
Berserk: The Golden Age Arc II – The Battle for Doldrey
Berserk: The Golden Age Arc III – The Advent
Berserk: The Golden Age Arc – Memorial Edition
Berserk (2016)
Berserk Recap (Skip, recap episode of Berserk 2016)
Berserk 2nd Season
Berserk: Recollections of the Witch (Skip, recap of 2nd season)
Berserk 1997, Golden Age Arc movies, and Memorial Edition: while all three adaptations cover the same story arc, each has its own unique presentation and approach. The 1997 anime series offers a more detailed exploration of the Golden Age Arc, while the movies provide a more concise and visually updated retelling. The Memorial Edition enhances the movies with additional content and improved animation. So, I recommend watching them all for a better understanding of the story.
If you’re interested in experiencing the Berserk story in its purest form, it’s recommended to read the manga, as it provides the most comprehensive and faithful adaptation of Kentaro Miura’s original work. Additionally, the manga holds the number one spot in both rating and popularity on MyAnimeList. So, if you’re a manga reader, just go ahead and read it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Is Berserk finished?
The Berserk manga remains unfinished following the passing of its creator, Kentaro Miura, in 2021. At the time of his death, the manga was still ongoing, leaving the story incomplete. However, Kouji Mori, a close friend and colleague of Miura’s, intends to carry on with the series until its conclusion. As of now, the manga is still being published.
Q2. Is Berserk ok for a 13 year old?
Berserk isn’t recommended for 13-year-olds. It contains a lot of violence with graphic scenes and heavy themes. There are also aspects of relationships and other mature topics that might be difficult to grasp at that age. It’s better suited for older teens and adults, typically around 17 years old and above.
Q3. What is the best way to experience Berserk?
Many fans recommend starting with the 1997 anime series or the Golden Age Arc movies to get acquainted with the story. Afterward, reading the manga is often considered the best way to experience the full scope of the Berserk universe.
Q4. Is Berserk 2016 a remake or a sequel?
The 2016 Berserk anime isn’t a sequel to the 1997 Berserk anime. Instead, it continues from Berserk: The Golden Age Arc, a trilogy of films. Although the trilogy retells certain events from the 1997 anime, they don’t share the same timeline. While watching the 2016 series, you might notice references to events that seem linked to the 1997 series, but they’re actually referring to The Golden Age Arc.
